Why do I need an Injury and Illness Prevention Program?

California mandates that a business maintain a written record of all health and safety hazards in the workplace and the proper procedures to handle these hazards. California OSHA recommends a written safety plan as the perfect means to meet these requirements. A written safety plan must be specific to the company and it's location, and address the safety standards for the company's industry classification.

A well designed Written Safety Plan will meet and exceed the California OSHA Standards. California mandates that every business has a Written Safety Plan, specific to the company and its location that addresses the safety standards for the company's industry classification. Employers are advised that in addition to the Injury and Illness Prevention Program for Safety, Health and Workplace Security your business must also have safety plans that address the standards that impact the operation of your business.

What are the benefits of a written safety plan?

A written safety plan assists in meeting your obligations under California law, and helps protect your business from costly fines and lawsuits.

How do I use my written safety plan?

Keep in mind, if your safety plan isn't in written form your company is not compliant! We provide your injury and illness prevention program as a series of printable PDF documents available for download from our IIPP Management Center. Once you have received your safety plan, please print out all the documents provided and make them available to all employees in your workplace.

Cal/OSHA Regulation Title 8, CCR Section 3203 requires that all businesses in California maintain a written safety plan (or IIPP). The Injury and Illness Prevention Program provides written documentation of all health and safety hazards in the workplace. The written safety plan must be printed and available to all employees on request.

Failure to provide an effective written safety plan can result is fines. Cal/OSHA cites failure to provide an IIPP among it's top 10 most cited standards, annually.

*The California Basic Written Safety Plan is not an "OSHA-proof" IIPP. Additional requirements may be applicable depending on industry type. The effectiveness of an IIPP and how well it meets Cal/OSHA regulations depends on you addressing all the requirements and putting them into practice in your workplace.
